Best Ways to Prevent Gum Disease

Updated: Jan 10, 2022

Gum disease and/or periodontal disease is often overlooked by patients because it is not something that causes much discomfort until its late stages.

Its effects, however, can eventually be severe as it is not only harmful for one's overall health, but can also lead to loose teeth, infections and eventually the loss of teeth.

Prevention is key, so it is important to develop good habits early on.

Gum disease is caused by bacteria in the mouth, which form plaque.

Over time, plaque hardens into buildup that we call calculus. It is this plaque and calculus that cause an inflammatory reaction in the gums. A sign of this can be sensitive gums that bleed easily, as well as deep pockets between the tooth and the gums as measured by the dentist or hygienist.

To prevent the progression of disease, it is what we do day-to-day that is the most important.

A big part of home care includes brushing and flossing with a focus on not only the teeth, but cleaning into the gums.

It is also helpful to eat healthy foods. Staying hydrated, eating foods that contain vitamin C, and decreasing carbohydrates and sugars will help the teeth and gums be healthier.

Furthermore, getting regular cleanings and check-ups are very important to help remove the deposits that cause gum disease.

Appointments also give the dentist and hygienist a chance to re-evaluate the health of the teeth and gums. Having dry mouth, smoking and taking certain medications can also increase one's risk of gum disease. Oral health care is not one size fits all so it is important to find out what you need to do for your current situation.
