What is a dental implant?
A dental implant is a titanium screw that is placed into your jaw bone. After the implant surgery, a crown is placed on top of the dental implant and will function much like a natural tooth.
Why should I choose an implant over a bridge or a denture?
Implants are a very common and popular way to replace a one or more missing teeth in the most natural way possible; you will be able to floss around the crown, and it has the support and strength of your natural teeth. In addition, it does not rely on the support of other teeth like bridges or partial dentures do. Implants can’t get cavities but they still do require regular maintenance and cleaning to ensure that the bony support around them remains strong. There are many ways to replace missing teeth, so please have a discussion with your dentist about the pros and cons of each treatment option.
What is the process of getting an implant?
First, a consultation will be needed to examine your mouth and review your medical history to determine if you will be a good candidate for dental implants. We will develop a treatment plan with several options for you to choose from. Then, a 3D x-ray will be taken so we can analyze the amount of bone in the proposed implant area. At this point, we will determine if there are any extra steps needed, such as bone grafting, sinus lifting, or gum grafting. The implant is carefully planned and a surgical guide made so we can predictably and precisely place the implant. Once the implant is placed, we will wait at least three months to allow for the implant to heal. After the healing period, a crown will be placed on the implant, and you will be able to use and treat it like your own tooth!
